Overview

Situated at the nexus of maritime trade, the new administration building for the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority is a direct architectural response to its logistical environment. Seeking to create a landmark that resonates with its context, MOST MONTI STUDIO drew conceptual inspiration from the fundamental unit of global trade: the shipping container. By abstracting this industrial element, we designed a monumental civic headquarters that celebrates the identity of the port while providing a highly modern, climate-responsive workspace.

Volumetric Stacking & Spatial Dynamics
The building’s unique volumetry is generated by a rigorous yet playful stacking of massive, container-like blocks. Rather than designing a static, solid tower, we strategically shifted and displaced these volumes along the horizontal axis. This pushing and pulling of the mass creates a striking, sculptural silhouette defined by dramatic cantilevers and deep, carved-out voids. This dynamic stacking not only breaks down the scale of the building but also creates accessible, shaded outdoor terraces for the administrative staff.

A Building That "Breathes"
Crucially, this shifted volumetry allows the architecture to actively interact with the coastal climate. The large voids created by the offset blocks act as spatial lungs, capturing ocean breezes to naturally cross-ventilate the structure and draw deep natural daylight into the interior offices.

To unify the composition and provide critical solar protection, the entire building is wrapped in a porous, corrugated metallic skin. This textured outer envelope serves as a sophisticated brise-soleil—filtering the intense West African sun while serving as a poetic, visual homage to the ribbed steel of the shipping containers that surround the site.
